1. Biografía.
Darrell Lance Abbott, también llamado "Diamond Darrell" y "Dimebag Darrell", nació en Ennis, Texas (US) el 20 de agosto de 1966. Era, y seguirá siendo en todos nuestros corazones, uno de los mejores guitarristas de todos los tiempos. Se hizo popular en su banda de heavy metal "Pantera", de la que fue miembro fundador. También formó parte de una banda de rock sureño (southern rock) llamada "Rebels Meets Rebel".
Comenzó a tocar la guitarra a los 13 años. Su primera guitarra fue una Les Paul modelo Hondo que tocaba junto a un pequeño amplificador. En sus primeros años como músico ganó varios concursos de guitarra locales, siendo el más notable un concurso celebrado en el Agora Ballroom, en Dallas, donde ganó una Dean ML.
Dimebag formó Pantera en 1981 junto a su hermano Vinnie Paul a la batería. La banda tocó con grupos de la talla de Slayer, Megadeth, y Metallica, así como con bandas del metal tradicionales tales como Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Venom, y Judas Priest. Influenciado por estas bandas, Pantera pasó del "glam metal", que tocaban en sus inicios, al subgénero post-thrash "groove" metal. Tras 9 años de formación Pantera sacó a la luz su primer éxito comercial en 1990, "Cowboys from Hell". El estilo "groove" de Pantera cristalizó en su magnífico álbum "Vulgar Display Of Power", publicado el 25 de febrero de 1992, en el que Abbott endureció su sonido a la guitarra. En 1994, Abbott sustituyó su apodo "Diamond Darrell" por el de "Dimebag Darrell". Posteriormente, a mediados de los 90s surgieron tensiones en el seno de la banda, debido principalmente al abuso de las drogas por parte de Phil Anselmo. En 2003, el grupo se tomó un largo paréntesis pero no llegó a disolverse formalmente. Anselmo dejó la banda para participar en otros proyectos, tales como "Superjoint Ritual" y "Down".
Pasado un año, Dimebag formó con su hermano Vinnie la banda "Damageplan", que poseía un estilo heavy metal que heredaba el sonido groove metal de Pantera. Los hermanos Abbott reclutaron al guitarrista de Halford, Pat Lachman para las voces, y a Bob Zilla al bajo. Damageplan publicó su álbum de début "New Found Power" en Estados Unidos el 10 de febrero de 2004, y alcanzaron el puesto 38 en las listas Billboard 200, vendiendo 44.676 copias durante la primera semana. "Dimebag" dijo "queríamos extender y ampliar nuestras capacidades al máximo".
Abbott fue influenciado por Ace Frehley, Tony Iommi, Joe Satriani, Ty Tabor, Pete Willis, Van Halen, Kerry King y un largo etcétera.
Frecuentemente aparecía en revistas de guitarra especializadas, era elegido por los lectores en innumerables votaciones, y era columnista de la revista Guitar World, donde editaron todas sus publicaciones en un libro llamado "Riffer Madness".
